South American Magellanic penguin and the man who saved his life.

South American Magellanic penguin who swims 5,000 miles each year to be reunited with the man who saved his life.

Today’s most heartwarming story is brought to you from a beach in Brazil.
It’s the story of a South American Magellanic penguin who swims 5,000 miles each year to be reunited with the man who saved his life.
Retired bricklayer and part time fisherman Joao Pereira de Souza, 71, who lives in an island village just outside Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, found the tiny penguin, covered in oil and close to death, lying on rocks on his local beach in 2011.
Joao cleaned the oil off the penguin’s feathers and fed him a daily diet of fish to build his strength. He named him Dindim.

After a week, he tried to release the penguin back into the sea. But, the bird wouldn’t leave. ‘He stayed with me for 11 months and then, just after he changed his coat with new feathers, he disappeared,’ Joao recalls.
And, just a few months later, Dindim was back. He spotted the fisherman on the beach one day and followed him home.

For the past five years, Dindim has spent eight months of the year with Joao and is believed to spend the rest of the time breeding off the coast of Argentina and Chile.
It’s thought he swims up to 5,000 miles each year to be reunited with the man who saved his life.

‘I love the penguin like it’s my own child and I believe the penguin loves me,’ Joao told Globo TV. ‘No one else is allowed to touch him. He pecks them if they do. He lays on my lap, lets me give him showers, allows me to feed him sardines and to pick him up.

It’s thought Dindim believes the fisherman is also a penguin (Picture: TV Globo)
‘Everyone said he wouldn’t return but he has been coming back to visit me for the past four years. He arrives in June and leaves to go home in February and every year he becomes more affectionate as he appears even happier to see me.’

Biologist Professor Krajewski, who interviewed the fisherman for Globo TV, told The Independent: ‘I have never seen anything like this before. I think the penguin believes Joao is part of his family and probably a penguin as well.
‘When he sees him he wags his tail like a dog and honks with delight.
And, just like that, the world seems a kinder place again.

Be More Mindful Every Day

  Be More Mindful Every Day

Rather than being distracted and lost in thought, mindfulness shows us how to be present and aware.

Three simple tips for living more mindfully:
1. Walk with awareness

Without trying to change the way you’re walking, simply observe how it feels.

Pay attention to what you see, hear and smell. By becoming more aware of the physical senses, the mind naturally feels more grounded.

2. Reflect on your day to find three things you feel grateful for.

The important thing is to acknowledge them.

Each time you do, you train the mind to be softer, calmer, kinder and happier.

3. Learn to meditate

Quiet down and pay attention.
For 10 minutes a day practice watching your breath come and go.

Meditate first thing in the morning to start the day with a calm, clear mind.

Mindful Awareness

UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center

Mindfulness is making the news these days. It has been depicted in the media primarily as a tool to hone attention, to cultivate sensory awareness, and to keep us in the present moment.

Developing these tools takes effort and determination, but why is it we can sometimes be mindful without really even trying? Perhaps we were naturally mindful at points in life before we ever learned what mindfulness was. Maybe we feel naturally connected, present, and at ease in nature. Or we become mindful while talking authentically with a friend, or in the midst of music, art, or athletic activity.

Mindfulness is not only a meditation technique, but also a state of being. This state is available to anyone; it is a natural human capacity. Mindfulness practice, as a tool, is tremendously helpful to cultivate this awareness, and the state can arise at any moment. Mindfulness is also connected to a set of powerful outcomes: happiness, emotional regulation, compassion, altruism, and kindness.

We encourage you to attend an array of offerings to cultivate the moment-to-moment awareness, which is the foundation of our practice.

      Terraplane Blues by Robert Johnson

Terraplane Blues [Remastered] ROBERT JOHNSON (1936)  Delta Blues Guitar Legend

"Terraplane Blues" is a blues song recorded in 1936 in San Antonio, Texas, by bluesman Robert Johnson. "Terraplane Blues" was Johnson's first single and it became a moderate regional hit,[1] selling 5,000 copies.
Johnson used the car model Terraplane as a metaphor for sex. In the lyrical narrative, the car will not start and Johnson suspects that his girlfriend let another man drive it when he was gone. In describing the various mechanical problems with his Terraplane, Johnson creates a setting of thinly veiled sexual innuendo. The guitar parts in "Terraplane Blues" are similar to those in Johnson's "Stones in my Passway".

And I feel so lonesome, you hear me when I moan

And I feel so lonesome, you hear me when I moan

Who been drivin' my Terraplane for you since I been gone?
I'd said I flash your lights, mama, you horn won't even blow

Somebody's been runnin' my batteries down on this machine

I even flash my lights, mama, this horn won't even blow

Got a short in this connection, hoo well, babe, it's way down below
I'm goin' heist your hood, mama, I'm bound to check your oil

I'm goin' heist your hood, mama, mmm, I'm bound to check your oil

I got a woman that I'm lovin', way down in Arkansas
Now, you know the coils ain't even buzzin', little generator won't get the spark

Motor's in a bad condition, you gotta have these batteries charged

But I'm cryin', please, please don't do me wrong

Who been drivin' my Terraplane now for you since I been gone?
Mr. highway man, please don't block the road

Please, please don't block the road

'Cause she's reachin' a cold one hundred and I'm booked and I got to go
      Mmm-mmm-mmm-mmm-mmm

You, you hear me weep and moan

Who been drivin' my Terraplane now for you since I been gone?
I'm gon' get down in this connection, keep on tanglin' with your wires

I'm gon' get down in this connection, oh well, keep on tanglin' with these wires

And when I mash down on your little starter, then your sparkplug will give me fire

      Mindfulness-Based Psychotherapy:

      Psychotherapy Notes:

"For too long, care has been conceived of as either practitioner-centered or patient-centered.

In actuality, the healing relationship has always been a crucible for mutual transformation. The bare willingness of human beings to encounter one another in the midst of our weaknesses and strengths is the quintessential transformative agent.

But my experience tells me that it is nearly impossible for us to relate to another human being in this way if we do not begin to relate to ourselves in the same manner.

To walk such a path requires a method: a disciplined way of learning to pay attention to all that is arising within. This is called mindfulness.

But mindfulness is not simply a technique. It is an act of love. Our willingness to see, to hold ourselves closely just as we are, while being this way with another, is a revealing and deeply healing expression of care."
